PANews reported on January 16 that a16z co-founder Marc Andreessen said in the Hoover Institution podcast that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is prioritizing the resumption of offline work for federal employees. He pointed out that the average occupancy rate of federal office buildings in Washington, DC is only 25%, and many employees only go to the office one or two days a month, and some employees only go to the office two days in two months.
Andreessen mentioned that DOGE's priorities include optimizing staffing, cutting government spending and streamlining regulation, and said the team has "very smart ideas" in these areas. He also questioned whether the president has the authority to require federal employees to return to the office, and said that the current prevalence of remote work poses a challenge to work efficiency.
Previously, Trump advisers Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy proposed cutting $2 trillion in "government waste." Relevant reports show that only 6% of federal employees work in the office regularly, and Musk pointed out that after deducting security and maintenance personnel, the proportion of employees working in the office full-time may be as low as 1%.
