French lawmakers propose Bitcoin mining as a new solution to excess electricity

PANews reported on June 16 that according to Cryptoslate, a group of French lawmakers are advocating a national review to study how Bitcoin mining can help solve the country's persistent problem of overproduction of electricity. The proposal was submitted to the French National Assembly on June 12, urging the government to study whether Bitcoin's energy-intensive mining process can be used to absorb excess electricity, especially electricity from nuclear power plants, which are the source of most of France's electricity. France's nuclear power generation accounts for more than 70%, and in 2024, it caused a loss of 80 million euros due to electricity waste. The proposal points out that Bitcoin mines can be used as flexible power units, which can be started and stopped quickly to balance the load on the grid, while using abandoned industrial sites and recovering waste heat. The proposal requires the government to evaluate the feasibility of establishing a regulated low-carbon mining industry, believing that this move can both stabilize the energy market and create jobs.
