Powell will attend a Supreme Court hearing to defend the Fed's independence.

PANews reported on January 20th that, according to CNBC and the Associated Press, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell plans to personally appear before the U.S. Supreme Court this Wednesday to discuss President Trump's attempt to remove Fed Governor Tim Cook from the Fed. This rare move is seen as a crucial battle to defend the central bank's independence. Trump has accused Cook of loan fraud and sought his removal, while Cook has denied wrongdoing and filed a lawsuit. If Trump succeeds in removing Cook, he will have the opportunity to control a majority of the Fed seats. This event comes at a time when Powell himself is facing a criminal investigation.
